Energy
- any source of usable power; in the political context, a source of power for use in transporting people/goods, creating goods across industries, and providing electricity to homes and businesses

Energy independence
- the stated goal of reducing, or eliminating, energy sources from outside the U.S. and producing most, or all, energy inside the U.S.

Ethanol - a combustible form of alcohol that can be used as an fuel alternative to gasoline; it is derived from plants such as corn and sugar cane

Fossil fuels
- hydrocarbons found in the top layer of the Earth's crust; the most notable fossil fuels are coal, oil, and natural gas

Oil barrel - 42 US gallons, the standard unit for measuring for crude oil and other petroleum products in the United States

Petroleum - a flammable liquid found in the Earth's crust;also known as crude oil

Renewable energy - energy generated from natural resources that can be naturally replenished; this includes solar power, wind power, hydroelectricity, biomass and biofuels
