When Disaster Strikes
http://www.nytimes.com/learning/teachers/lessons/20050831wednesday.html?searchpv=learning_lessons
In this lesson, students examine the ways major industries are affected by and respond to a natural disaster. They then interview local representatives of these industries on how they prepare for and manage such disasters and create emergency disaster guides for their community.

Waste Not, Want Not
http://www.nytimes.com/learning/teachers/lessons/20041013wednesday.html?searchpv=learning_lessons
In this lesson, students consider the types of debris that litters beaches and conduct research on waste management. They then interview professionals in a particular field of waste management and write reports for a booklet about garbage and sewage to be given to the school's library or local town hall.

The Wrath of Hurricane Mitch
http://www.nytimes.com/learning/teachers/lessons/19981104wednesday.html?searchpv=learning_lessons
In this lesson, students investigate how hurricanes and other natural disasters can devastate the elements of the infrastructure of a country, as well as the lives of its people. Students then work in committees, each focused on one element of a country's infrastructure, to analyze the existing infrastructure problems in Honduras caused by Hurricane Mitch, devise possible solutions for these problems, and assess how each aspect of a country's infrastructure is interdependent to the others. Students also determine how lesser developed countries and developed countries differ in times of catastrophe.

Amidst the Rubble of Ruined Cities
http://www.nytimes.com/learning/teachers/lessons/19990127wednesday.html?searchpv=learning_lessons
This lesson is designed to promote an understanding of how a natural disaster, specifically an earthquake, can devastate the essential aspects of a country’s infrastructure. Students will work in committees to develop and propose solutions to rebuild various elements of Colombia’s infrastructure in the wake of the January 25, 1999 earthquake, as well as compare and contrast the earthquake’s affects on Colombia to the 1994 earthquake in Los Angeles.

Unraveling the Web
http://www.nytimes.com/learning/teachers/lessons/20020328thursday.html?searchpv=learning_lessons
In this lesson, students consider how a message might be traced along a complex network, then explore "backbone maps" as a basis for understanding the purpose and structure of the Internet.
