Statement of Issue

Globalization
is a complex process of economic, social, technological, cultural, and political changes that increases the integration and interaction between people and companies across the world. It has accelerated over the past two decades because of several developments that have reduced old barriers to cooperation, including:

* end of Cold war and spread of democracy and capitalism
* rise of internet and mobile communications
* free trade liberalizations, including free trade blocks (NAFTA, European Union)
* widely available air travel and universal shipping companies
* unified currency and free travel zones (European Union)

US politicians often discuss the economic effects of globalization. On one hand, globalization has given us cheaper consumer goods, and access to interesting new products from all over the world. It has also helped some poorer countries become more economically secure and technologically advanced. On the other hand, things that were once made in America are now being made abroad, which has led to the loss of millions of jobs and greater dependency on those other countries. Also, people in other countries sometimes argue that globalization has given America too much power over their country's affairs; and also allowed the US to export pollution that the country won't allow inside its own borders.

“Globalization means that the "butterfly effect" is everywhere at work. The mistakes of a stockbroker in Singapore or the collapse of the Baht in Bangkok, the decisions of a Finnish industrial concern, or what the Governor of Minas Gerais in Brazil decides to do about his State's debt, have had consequences for the world as a whole.” -- Jacques Chirac, Former President of France

Dear students, welcome!

I have lived in three different countries, have been exposed to both communism and democracy, to both peace and war, and work in an office with people from 30 different countries who speak a total of 70 languages. Globalization is therefore a topic I feel closely involved with, and of which I have a mostly positive opinion, while also being mindful of its darker side. I would be more than happy to answer any questions you might have, and assist you in any way I can. Good luck!

Regards from Switzerland,
Darko
